Urban Art Retreat’s Back to School Event

Annual back to school event provided by Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center at 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. took place on August 25 from noon-4p.m. We began with a children’s parade of costumes and noisemakers to wake people up to see their stage performances and be a part of the audience. Each year, kids perform on our stage showing a variety of talents and always want adults in the neighborhood to applaud! This talent show is open to all children who want to show off their talents- dance, sing, read poetry, fashion show, and more. For instance one small child danced over & over, and another boy read from a book of poems by Maya Angelou. The youth program at CUARC this year featured children learning about domestic violence and writing poems about how kids feel about domestic violence in their homes. (see the website to read children’s stories about violence they have seen and/or experienced. (www.urbanartretreat.com).

THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WESTSIDE STUDENTS DESERVE

The great scholar and social scientist Dr. W.E.B. DuBois once said, “The first great mass movement for public education at the expense of the state … came from the Negro.” As an African-American educator and the great, great grandson of slaves, I carry the burden of knowing my ancestors’ hope for education is being realized through me and that as a teacher of mostly black children, it is my duty to infuse my classroom with a passion for learning and academic excellence. My desire to teach is fueled by the simple premise that people should be treated equally, regardless of their color or class, and everyone should have access to a free, high-quality education.
